Starting in Annecy, the etape will set out along the edge of the scenic lake. It will then head for town of Talloires, on the eastern lake shore.
It then turns away from the lake through forest land to Thones, where the road zig zags up the mountain side to Col de Croix Fry, riders having climbed 1000 metres so far.
There is then an exciting descent of around 800m to Saint Jean-de- Sixt , followed by Entremont, before the next climb, the Montee du Plateau des Glieres, which is 6km of 11.2%. Quite a tough one!
The road then follows the valley of the river Borne. After descent of around 700m, followed by a short climb, the route descends a further 200m to Bonneville, in the Arve river valley.
After Bonneville there is a fairly flat valley section for 12km until the next climb starts at Scionzier.
The 785 metre climb up to Col de Romme consists of 8.8km with a fairly constant gradient of around 9%. The legs get a rest at the top as the gradient falls below 3% for a couple of km, then we descend for 4km before the final climb to Col de Colombiere, 7.5km of 8.5% average.
Then It is downhill all the way to the finish at Le Grand Bornand!
